The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

Heritage railways are enjoying increased attention in the UK, with more families choosing them for a day out, and more volunteers giving their time to keep the trains and stations running. Shield Batteries provides rail battery sets for many heritage lines, including The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in West Yorkshire.

KWVR Haworth

About The KWVR

The KWVR is a preserved standard gauge line which joins the national railway network at Keighley and runs 5 miles up the valleys of the River Worth and Bridgehouse Beck to Oxenhope. It stops at six stations in total including Haworth of Bronte fame, making it a popular line with tourists, picnic-goers and history-lovers alike.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is perhaps most famous for its role in the 1970 film version of Edith Nesbit’s story ‘The Railway Children’. The film was shot at Oakworth station and many of the railway volunteers of the time were involved. This station like many of the others on the line has been completely restored to Edwardian splendour, being gas-lit and heated by coal fires!

At the time of filming there were still very few heritage railways in the UK, and The KWVR was the only line that could provide a tunnel – crucial for the filming of The Railway Children. Several locomotives were used in the film and thanks to the hard work of volunteers over the years, they all still survive to this day. They were painted in fictional liveries for the film including brown, apple green and plain black – reminiscent of real-life vintage railway companies like the Great Northern Railway and the London and North Eastern Railway.

The 5775 and 957 locomotives used in the film can still be seen on the KWVR, although as of 2014 they’re on static display rather than active duty.

Other locations around The KWVR can be seen in the film, including the “Three Chimneys” house in Oxenhope, the Bronte Parsonage which was used as Dr. Forrest’s surgery and of course the Mytholmes tunnel. Anyone wanting to tour the various location can pick up a leaflet of ‘The Railway Children Walks’ from any KWVR stations.

Visiting The KWVR

The KWVR runs both steam and diesel locomotives, so if you want to see a steam engine in action it’s worth planning ahead to see which is planned to run on the day of your visit. There are special events throughout the year, from Footplate Experiences which allow you to actually drive and fire a locomotive, to Dining Trains which allow you to sit back in complete luxury and sample gourmet food whilst you enjoy your trip.

The KWVR website has comprehensive information on upcoming events, prices and which locomotives are scheduled to run over the coming weeks, so why not visit this beautiful part of Yorkshire. How many locations will you recognise from the film?

Rapier Sunbeam H120 Fitted With Shield Classic Car Battery

Classic car battery competition winner Sharon wasted no time in putting her new Shield battery to good use. Here we can see it about to be fitted to her 1973 Rapier Sunbeam H120, and then in situ in the engine bay:

This car has in Sharon’s family since 1983, and although it was mechanically sound it needed extensive bodywork. In 1989 works started on the car in earnest, with new wings, doors, front valance, rear valance, bonnet, boot etc all being added. All mechanical components were renewed or reconditioned and a year later, the shell was painted and given new trim and chrome.

The car was first shown in 1992/3 where it won all prizes at the club national – a great result after so much hard work. Over the next seventeen years the car has gone on to win many cups including the club Master class for thirteen consecutive years!

We think you’ll agree the Sunbeam looks great in the paddock – a true classic.
